Subaru of Indiana Automotive - Environmental Romance

Subaru of Indiana Automotive plant has positively blown away the environmentalist community by its efficient environment-loving policy. The plant has successfully been able to become zero-land-fill since 2004. That means that the plant is not sending anything or any garbage that would be stored in Earth. The plant converts recycles or reuses 99.8 per cent of its garbage. The rest of that portion is sent to be destroyed in an environmental-friendly fashion in Ohio. Surprisingly, the plant’s implementation has affected their production model as well. Cars made in 2007 produced about 95 kilograms less of waste than the cars manufactured in the year 2000. Even the garbage from cafeteria and used hand towels is sent to a waste-to-energy plant that uses combustion to produce energy which then provides power to downtown Indianapolis. These feats are astronomical, given the fact that this particular Subaru plant is capable of manufacturing 260,000 cars per year.

Not only is this Subaru faction helping our environment, but it also helping Subaru’s pockets. It saves $1.3 million by reusing shipping material more than 5 times for a cycle. The dust and slag from all that welding is cleaned and recycle for its valuable copper residue. The plant is equipped with an oil purification process. This process reduces the amount of oil consumption of the plant by 22,712 liters per year.

This regime enabled SIA to conserve 53,116,000 kW-hr of electricity. The SIA plant recycled 13,142 tons of scrap metal, 1,448 tons of cardboard and 908 tons of wood. That can be translated to saving 29,900 trees, leaving intact a 26,377 cubic meters of landfill space, conserving 53,116,000 kW-hr of electricity, reducing gasoline consumption by 131,354 liters, and conserving 38,368,933 liters of our Earth’s water. An icing to the most delicious green cake is the fact that this plant is located by a 335 hectare wildlife habitat.

So what kind of product do you expect to come out of this plant? A gas-guzzling SUV, or a carbon dioxide-emitting stud-car? Think again. The Legacys and Outbacks projected to release in 2009 are all PZEVs, PZEV being Partial Zero Emission Vehicle. The car has the usual 170 horsepower and 170 lb/ft torque, but its emission is close to zero. The hydrocarbons are trapped inside the car system and are kept away from being emitted to the atmosphere. A massive environment-friendly automotive plant, a close to zero pollutant-emitting vehicles, the SIA plant is a dream for all environmentalists.
